THE SMITH, Multi-family Residence. Everett, MA

The Smith stands as the inaugural structure in an unfolding development within Boston's South End, comprising a 300-unit residential complex and maker space. Acclaimed for its LEED-Silver and Fitwel certifications, it represents a forward-thinking urban living environment, distinguished by its innovative features. Emphasizing expansive green areas, artists’ lofts, and upper-floor outdoor amenities such as a rooftop pool, The Smith masterfully blends these elements into a singular space.

Rooted in the cultural and architectural essence of the neighborhood, this multifamily/maker/mixed-use project revitalizes open spaces, layered structures, and pedestrian-friendly pathways within the community. A sprawling courtyard at street level forms a nexus, fostering a profound connection with nature in the South End while inviting natural light and neighborhood views into the building.

At an urban level, the project endeavors to reintegrate fragmented city blocks prevalent in the area's layout, introducing concepts of placemaking, connectivity, and verdant landscapes. Former open-air parking lots have been transformed into purposeful open spaces enriched with diverse trees, bioswales, and layered greenery. Promoting environmental consciousness, the project offers one-for-one bicycle parking and storage, an on-site bike-sharing program, and priority parking with electric vehicle charging—an effort to encourage eco-friendly practices among residents, emphasizing environmental stewardship.
